Some Assembly Required

  • hand cut birch veneer, 68  x  47  x 2
Some Assembly Required was a part of the Art of Science exhibit that connects local artists with research scientists from St. Jude Children's Hospital. The image provided by Dr. Birgit Nimmervoll, shows various compounds being tested for use on rare brain tumors. What intrigued me about the image was that each dot: whether green, red or blue, held information. I knew there was data in the diagram but I did not know how to read it or decipher it. I was impressed with the sheer volume of evidence contained within the graph and the work required on the scientist’s part to then organize and utilize that information. I wanted to create a work of art that simulated that feeling. The viewer knows there is information contained within the piece but there is some work – or ASSEMBLY - required to find it.
