Assay
gel medium, resin, batting, thread, embroidery hoop, 24 x 24 x 3.5
I wanted to explore the parallels between science and art. A scientist examines a cell – the ‘building’ block of all organisms, while a sculptor ‘builds’ a work of art. In a lab, there are petri dishes. In the studio, one might find an embroidery hoop. A petri dish is filled with agar where I used resin, both have a thick, translucent quality.
I selected the yeast spotting assay slide not just for its science but also its aesthetic qualities. I reproduced the not quite spherical shape to act as an object or cell that I could duplicate in mass. The mutation of the cell can read as a gene growing or declining based on the perspective of the viewer. A color palette of animated flesh tones helps to humanize the cluster of cells and environment.
